ASHLAND – Playing its third game in three days, the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team matched its win total from all of the last season after it picked up a 7-0 victory over Northland College today at Bay Area Civic Center.
The Pointers improve to 7-5-0 overall this season, while the LumberJacks fall to a record of 1-11-0 overall. The Pointers had just seven wins all of last season and had just four wins at this point last year. It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
It was the Pointers power play unit that got the scoring started in the first period as Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) (So.-Schaumburg, IL) scored just five minutes into the contest to give Stevens Point a 1-0 lead. Taylor Guay (Boulder, CO/Boulder) (Jr.-Boulder, CO) gave the Pointers their second power play goal of the first period, putting the puck in the net with eight minutes left in the period. Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) (Jr.-Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) gave Stevens Point a 3-0 lead at the first intermission when he scored an even-strength goal with 16 seconds left in the period. The Pointers outshot Northland 14-2 in the period.
Ross Johnson (International Falls, MN/Falls) (Jr.-International Falls, MN/Falls) extended the Stevens Point lead to 4-0 early in the second period on even-handed goal. Shane Foster (Madison/LaFollette) (Jr.-Madison/LaFollette) scored the second goal of the second period with 4:48 remaining to make the score 5-0. The Pointers dominated the period again outshooting Northland 21-3.
The scoring continued into the third period as Johnson scored his second goal of the contest with 14:54 remaining to make the score 6-0. The final score of the game came from Chris Conway (Westminster, CO/Northwood) (So.-Westminster, CO/Northland), who put the puck in the net with over 11 minutes left to make the final score 7-0 Stevens Point.
The Pointers outshot the LumberJacks 44-8 in the game. The eight shots by Northland is one more than the fewest shots on goal ever allowed by the Pointers, which came against St. Norbert College in 1991. Stevens Point just had three penalties in the game, while Northland committed seven penalties.
Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison) earned his third shutout of the season stopping eight shots. Speer is now 5-2-0 this year.
The Pointers return home Tuesday night to face UW-Eau Claire in a non-conference contest. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. at Willett Arena.
