STEVENS POINT - The Pointers wasted no time showing who the better team was Saturday afternoon at Ice Hawks Arena. Led by junior Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Jr.-Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) who scored two goals and two assists the third-ranked Pointers cruised to an 8-0 victory over Finlandia.
Grossman got the Pointers on the board in the first when she banged home a rebound off of a Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) (Fr.-Burnsville, MN) shot at 13:42 in the first period.
In the second period the Pointers scored three goals to take full control of the game. Sophomore Jessica Edward (Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) (So-Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's, MN) scored her first of two goals when she scored on a power play at 9:09. The Pointers finished the game with four power play goals.
Senior Jess Suter (Waunakee/Waunakee) (Sr.-Waunakee) was the next to get on the board for the Pointers when she scored off a breakaway. Senior Katy Lankey (Baraboo/Baraboo) (Sr.-Baraboo) closed out the scoring in the second period with an unassisted shorthanded goal to break the game wide open.
It took the Pointers only 34 seconds to get on the board in the third period when Edward scored her second goal. Grossman had the assist.
The Pointers went on to score a team record-tying four goals in the third period. Grossman, Carothers and junior Rachael Graves (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji) (Jr.-Bemidji, MN) all added goals in the third. The Pointers out shot Finlandia 37-4.
Sophomore Ann Hulme (Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter (NH)) (So.-Shaker Heights, OH/Philips Exeter, NH) had four saves to cap off her second shutout of the season. With the win the UW-Stevens Point is now 9-0-0.
