STEVENS POINT – The 20th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team outscored Lawrence University a combined 41-10 in the last 10 minutes of each half to take care of the Vikings by a final score of 90-37 today in Berg Gym.
The Pointers improve to a record of 7-1 overall and the Vikings drop to a record of 3-4 overall. The Pointers have now won 17 straight games over non-conference opponents and have 17 straight home wins vs. non-WIAC foes in the regular season. Stevens Point is 11-2 all-time against Lawrence.
Lawrence jumped out on the Pointers scoring the first seven points of the game to take a 7-0 lead two minutes in. The Pointers then stormed back and scored the next 11 points to take an 11-7 lead with 15:33 left in the first half. Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Jr.-Mineral Point) scored the last five points of the run.
The Stevens Point lead was just four with 11:22 remaining, but the Pointers lengthened that lead with a 15-0 run over the span of seven minutes. The Pointers ended the half outscoring the Vikings 21-5 to take a 42-22 halftime lead.
The Stevens Point bench outscored the Lawrence bench 21-0 in the first half. The Pointers shot 48 % in the half doing most of their damage down low outscoring the Vikings 24-8 in the paint. The Vikings shot 35 % from the field.
The 20-point halftime deficit was as close as the Vikings would get in the game as the Pointers continued their success from the first half. Stevens Point used an 11-0 run starting at the halfway point of the second half on its way to ending the game on a 20-5 run to defeat the Vikings by a final score of 90-37.
Every single member of the Pointers basketball team that saw action got in the scoring column today. What's even more impressive is not a single Pointer scored in double-figures. The Stevens Point bench outscored the Vikings 36-5 in the second half. The Pointers shut out the Vikings in the paint in the second half 18-0. Stevens Point shot 51 % for the game, while the Vikings were held to 30 % shooting. The Pointers finished with 18 offensive rebounds and had a 43-30 edge on the glass. The Pointers had a season-high 22 assists.
Chelsea Kranz (Columbus/Columbus) (Sr.-Columbus), Katie Webber (Reedsburg/Reedsburg) (Jr.-Reedsburg), Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) (Sr.-Two Rivers), Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) (Fr.-Luck), and Christin Coles (Hustisford/Hustisford) (Fr.-Hustisford) all had eight points to lead the Pointers in scoring. Neuenfeldt had a team-high five rebounds. Janell Van Gomple (DeForest/DeForest) (Jr.-DeForest) led Stevens Point with four assists. Caresse Reiland had a game-high 12 points for the Vikings.
The Pointers have off until after Christmas when they travel to California to compete in the Surf n' Slam Classic. Their first game will be Thursday, January 27th against tournament host Point Loma Nazarene (CA) at 6 p.m. central time.
