Pointers Hang on to Defeat Superior

Box Score

STEVENS POINT – The third-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 lead and hung on to defeat ninth-ranked UW-Superior 2-1 tonight at Ice Hawks Arena.

The Pointers remain unbeaten this season with an overall record of 8-0-0 and a 5-0-0 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) record. The Yellowjackets fall to a record of 7-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the NCHA. The Pointers currently have the longest winning streak in NCAA Division III and have the second-longest in any division.

The Yellowjackets came into tonight as the best penalty-killing team in Division III, having allowed just one power play goal in 44 chances. Well the Pointers attacked that penalty-killing unit right away in the first period. Just 30 seconds into the power play Sarah Phillips (Kelowna, B.C./St. George's School (RI)) (So.-Kelowna, B.C./St. George's School, RI) drilled a slap shot into the net to give the Pointers the early 1-0 with just over four minutes left in the first period. Jenna Daggit (St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove) (Jr.-St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove) and Trish Piskula (Antigo/Antigo) (Jr.-Antigo) assisted the goal.

In the second period, the Pointers power play unit struck again as Trish Piskula (Antigo/Antigo) put in her own rebound to give Stevens Point a 2-0 advantage with 17:11 left in the period. The Yellowjackets cut that lead in half with 1:34 left in the period as Kim Schmeichel scored an even-handed goal just as the power play ended to make the score 2-1.

Pointer goaltender d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) (So.-Swartz Creek, MI) then stepped up big in the third period as she had 11 saves in the period. The Pointers had a big penalty-kill in the final five minutes of the third period as they defeated the Yellowjackets 2-1.

Superior had a 21-17 edge in shots. The Pointers finished 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Yellowjackets were 0-for-3.

Phillips had 20 saves as she improved to 5-0-0 this season. Rikki Nespor had 15 saves in the loss for Superior.

The Pointers will be in action again tomorrow afternoon when they host Finlandia University at 2:30 p.m. at Ice Hawks Arena.
