SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 15th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team cruised to an 84-60 victory over Carroll College tonight to capture it's second Surf n' Slam Classic Championship.
The Pointers had another member with a career-high effort tonight as Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Jr.-Mineral Point) scored a career-high 22 points and had a career-high 13 rebounds for her second career double-double. Sporle was 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
The Pointers started out where they left off last night as they jumped out to a 25-2 lead with 10 minutes left in the first half. The 23-point lead would be the biggest of the half. The Pioneers got as close as 16 in the half and trailed 43-26 at the halftime.
The Pointers shot 49 % in the first half, while Carroll shot 26 %. The Pointer bench had 16 points compared to nine points by the Pioneer bench.
Carroll would not get any closer than 16 points in the second half. The Pointers biggest lead of the game was 26 after a pair of Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) (Fr.-Luck) free throws with 4:42 remaining. Stevens Point ended up winning 84-60.
The Pointers scored 54 of the 84 points in the paint. Stevens Point shot 52 % for the game and held Carroll to 28 %. The Pointers had a 50-37 advantage on the glass.
Jesirae Heuer (Wisconsin Rapids/Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) (Sr.-Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) added 12 points for the Pointers, while Chelsea Kranz (Columbus/Columbus) (Sr.-Columbus) had 11 and Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) (Sr.-Two Rivers) had 10 points. Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) (Sr.-Wausau/East) had a team-high five assists.
The Pointers improve to 10-1 overall this season. The last time they captured the Surf n' Slam title was in 2003. That year, Stevens Point advanced all the way to the NCAA Tournament Semifinals. The Pointers have now won 20 straight games against non-conference opponents.
The Pointers return to conference action next Saturday when they host UW-Oshkosh in Berg Gym at 3 p.m. It is the first game of a men's and women's doubleheader.
