SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 15th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team rallied from a 17-point second half deficit to defeat the host Point Loma Nazarene (CA) 56-51 tonight in the first round of the Surf n' Slam Classic.
The Pointers improve to 8-1 this season, while Point Loma falls to 6-2. Point Loma is ranked 10th in the NAIA Division I poll. It is the first time this season that the Pointers trailed at the half and came back to win. It the largest halftime deficit that the Pointers have overcome since they trailed Whitewater by nine in 2005 and rallied to win by four.
The Sea Lions led by a small margin for the first 10 minutes of the first half. Point Loma extended that margin as it went on a 13-0 run over five minutes to take a 26-11 lead with six minutes left in the half. The Sea Lions went into halftime with a 32-18 advantage.
The Pointers shot just 26 % in the first half, while the Sea Lions shot 48 %. The Sea Lions had 15 points off of Stevens Point turnovers in the half and outscored the Pointers 16-2 in the paint.
The Point Loma lead grew to 17 three minutes into the second half. The Pointers then woke up and went on an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 38-32 with 12:48 on the clock. The Pointers continued to chip away and took its first lead of the night after a Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) (Sr.-Wausau/East) layup made the score 48-47 with 2:50 left in the game. The layup capped off six straight points by Houghton.
Stevens Point did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way as Houghton hit a pair of baskets and Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) (Sr.-Two Rivers) went 4-for-4 from the line as the Pointers won 56-51.
The second half was a total opposite of the first half as Stevens Point scored 15 points off of Point Loma turnovers and outscored the Sea Lions in the paint 20-8. The Pointer shot 50 % in the second half, while Point Loma shot 30 %.
Houghton scored 10 of the final 14 points for the Pointers as she finished with a game-high 18 points. Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) was the only other Pointer in double figures as she had 11 points. Neuenfeldt also had a team-high eight rebounds.
The Pointers will face Maryville University (MO) tomorrow at 6 p.m. Stevens Point time. Maryville defeated Rivier College 84-66 earlier today.
