Pointers Tie Finlandia

 HANCOCK, Mich. – In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team played Finlandia University to a 1-1 tie today at Houghton County Arena.

 The tie puts the Pointers at an 8-5-1 overall record, while Finlandia is at 6-3-1. It was the first overtime game this season for the Pointers and their first tie since a 4-4 tie against UW-Eau Claire last season.

 Stevens Point struck first in the opening period when Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) (Jr.-Forest Lake, MN) scored with 11:51 on the clock to give the Pointers a 1-0 lead. Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) (Jr.-Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) and Garrett Suter (Madison/Oregon) (Fr.-Madison/Oregon) assisted on the goal.

 The score remained that way until the second period when the Lions scored on the power play with 8:03 remaining to tie the contest 1-1. The Pointers outshot the Lions 8-3 in the third period, but could not find the back of the net as the game went into overtime.

 Finlandia controlled the five-minute extra session as they didn't allow a single Pointer-shot on goal, but put six on net the themselves. Stevens Point goalie Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison) stopped all six as the Pointers settled for a 1-1 tie.

 Speer finished with 25 saves on the day as his record stands at 6-2-1. Ryan Donovan had 25 saves for the Lions. Both teams had eight penalties for 16 minutes with the Lions going 1-for-6 on the power play and Pointers going 0-for-6.

 The Pointers have off over for the holidays and will not be in action until January 4th when they travel to face Gustavus Adolphus. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:05 p.m.
