Pointers Pull Away in the Second Half to Down Edgewood

 MADISON – The third-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team used a 17-1 run early in the second half to pull away from Edgewood College tonight, defeating the Eagles by a final score of 77-59 at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.

 The Pointers improve to 7-1 overall this season, while the Eagles fall to an overall record of 2-5. Stevens Point improves to 15-3 all-time against the Eagles.

 The Pointers were playing their third game in five days and were without top-scorer Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Jr.-Minocqua/Lakeland) for the second consecutive game. However, Edgewood wasn't feeling sorry for the Pointers as it jumped ahead to an 18-11 lead following a 9-0 run with 12 minutes left in the half. Stevens Point then used an 8-0 run its own to regain the lead with 4:22 left in the half. Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Jr.-Milwaukee/Rufus King) made a three-pointer at the end of the first half to give the Pointers a 35-31 lead at the break.

 Stevens Point shot 50 % from the field in the first half, while the Eagles shot 54 %. The Pointers did not score a single point inside in the half and had zero second-chance points.

 The Pointers changed that trend by scoring their first points of the second half on a layup by Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Jr.-Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln). With the score 48-42 Stevens Point with 15:44 left, the Pointers broke the game open by outscoring the Eagles 17-1 over six minutes to extend their lead to 65-43. Stevens Point took its biggest lead of the game after a Steve Hicklin (Sussex/Hamilton) (Sr.-Sussex/Hamilton) three-point field goal made the score 72-47 with 7:30 remaining. The Pointers went on to win easily by a score of 77-59.

 Stevens Point shot 57 % in the second half to finish at 54 % for the game. The Pointers were 7-for-13 from beyond the arc in the second half. Edgewood shot 43 % for the game.

 Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) led all-scorers, matching a career-high with 18 points. He and Matt Moses (Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) (So.-Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) also dished out a team-high four assists. Steve Hicklin (Sussex/Hamilton) added 16 points and Jerome Wotachek (Jr.-Mishicot) scored 10 points. Drew Jackson (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Jr.-Milwaukee/Rufus King) led the Pointers with five rebounds and four blocked shots. Brian Donais led the Eagles with 15 points off the bench.

 The Pointers will play again Saturday night when they travel over to Ripon to face the Red Hawks. The tip-off for that contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. That game can be viewed via the Internet at the following web site: http://www.midwestconference.tv/.
