Lankey's Goal Lifts the Pointers over the Falcons

 STEVENS POINT – Katy Lankey (Baraboo/Baraboo) (Sr.-Baraboo, WI) broke a 1-1 tie five minutes into the third period as the third-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team came back to defeat No. 10 UW-River Falls 2-1 today at Ice Hawks Arena.

 The win improves the Pointers overall record to 7-0-0 and their Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) record to 4-0-0. The Falcons fall to 2-4-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the NCHA.

 The Falcons scored first in the opening period when Jenna Scanlon scored on the power play with 6:21 left in the period. The Pointers outshot the Falcons in the first period 10-7.

 Stevens Point tied the game up at 1-1 in the second period when on the power play Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Jr.-Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) weaved through the defense and after her first shot on goal was stopped put in the rebound with 9:28 left in the period. The Pointers dominated the period outshooting the Falcons 15-5.

 Then with 15:14 left in regulation just after a River Falls penalty expired, Katy Lankey (Baraboo/Baraboo) would get a rebound and backhand it in to give the Pointers a 2-1 advantage. The Pointers hung on the rest of the way to complete the two-day sweep of the Pointers.

 d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) (So.-Swartz Creek, MI) had 18 saves to improve to 4-0-0 this season. Cassi Campbell had 35 saves in the loss for the Falcons. Stevens Point ended up outshooting the Falcons 37-19 in the game. There were 15 total penalties with the Pointers committing eight and the Falcons committing seven.

 The Pointers will remain at home next Friday when they host UW-Superior at Ice Hawks Arena. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m.
