WHITEWATER – The 16th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team had the game tied with 15 seconds left, but 10th-ranked UW-Whitewater would score a layup and knock down a pair of free throws to win by a score of 75-71 today at Kachel Gym.
The loss is the first for the Pointers this season as they drop to an overall record of 5-1. Whitewater stays unbeaten with a record of 5-0. The Pointers have lost by a combined five points in their last two trips to Whitewater, losing by one point last season.
Stevens Point had the lead and was in control for most of the first half. After scoring the first four points of the game, the Pointer-lead grew to as much as eight after a Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) (Sr.-Two Rivers) three-pointer with 3:44 left in the first half. However, over the next two minutes the Warhawks went on a 10-0 run to take its first lead of the game with 1:03 left in the first half. A Whitewater three-pointer at the end of the first half gave the Warhawks a 34-31 edge at halftime.
Both teams shot 48 % in the first half. The Warhawks had a 16-8 scoring edge in the paint. Whitewater also scored 16 points out of 12 Stevens Point turnovers.
After falling behind 38-35 two minutes into the second half the Pointers went on an 8-0 run capped off by a Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Jr.-Mineral Point) three-point play to make the score 43-38 with 14:51 left to play. Then with the Pointers up 50-46 with 10:28 remaining, the Warhawks used an 8-0 run of its own to take a 54-50 lead.
The lead then changed hands four more times the rest of the way as neither team had a lead of more than four points. With the score 71-68 Warhawks with 15 seconds left, Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) (Sr.-Wausau/East) drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 71-71. Following a timeout, the Warhawks put in a layup to take a 73-71 lead with eight seconds left. The Pointers then turned over the ball and Whitewater hit two free throws with five seconds left as the Warhawks won by a score of 75-71.
The Pointers shot 45 % for the game, while Whitewater shot 46 %. Stevens Point committed 23 turnovers compared to Whitewater's 15 turnovers. The Warhawks had 16 steals in the game.
Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) led the Pointers with 15 points. Chelsea Kranz (Columbus/Columbus) (Sr.-Columbus) added 14 points and Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) had 10 points. Jesirae Heuer (Wisconsin Rapids/Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) (Sr.-Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) had a team-high seven rebounds. Tiffany Morton had a game-high 20 points for the Warhawks.
The Pointers return home Wednesday to host UW-La Crosse. The tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Berg Gym.
