Pointers Blanked by No. 1 River Falls

 RIVER FALLS – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team could not manage any offense tonight as it fell to No. 1-ranked UW-River Falls by a score of 5-0 at Hunt Arena.

 The loss drops the Pointers to an overall record of 5-4-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the Northern Collegiate Athletic Conference (NCHA). The Falcons improve to an overall record of 7-1-3 and 3-0-1 in the conference. The last time the Pointers were shutout was also at River Falls on January 19, 2007, a 3-0 defeat. All five of the Falcons goals tonight came by way of the power play. The Pointers have allowed nine power play goals in the last two games.

 Stevens Point played really well against the top-ranked Falcons early on as it outshot River Falls 20-9 in the first period. However, the Falcons got their first power play goal of the night late in the first period when T.J. Dahl scored with 1:16 left in the period.

 River Falls then got two more power play goals in the first two minutes of the second period as Derek Hansberry scored 1:09 into the period and Jim Jensen scored 29 seconds later to make the score 3-0. Hansberry added his second power play goal of the game with over five minutes left in the second period to make the score 4-0 at the second intermission.

 Jim Henkemeyer added the final power play goal 29 seconds into the third period to make the final score 5-0.

 The Pointers committed 17 penalties for 53 minutes, while the Falcons had 15 penalties for 49 minutes. Stevens Point finished 0-for-7 on the power play and the Falcons were 5-for-9. River Falls had a narrow edge in shots 44-42.

 Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison) had 39 saves in the defeat for Stevens Point. Tyler Owens had 42 saves for the Falcons.

 The Pointers will travel to face UW-Superior next Friday night. The action is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.
