ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team upset 10th-ranked University of St. Thomas 4-2 tonight at St. Thomas Ice Arena.
The victory gives the Pointers a 2-1-0 record, while the Tommies suffer their first setback of the season and fall to 2-1-0. The Pointers won just one road game last season, which was also the road opener. The Tommies had won 17 of their last 18 games. The Pointers have won the last three meetings against St. Thomas and are 8-6-2 all-time against the Tommies.
After a scoreless first period, the Pointers jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Ross Johnson (International Falls, MN/Falls) (Jr.-International Falls, MN/Falls) scored an unassisted goal about eight minutes into the second period. St. Thomas tied the contest up with 5:01 remaining in the second period when Adam Davis scored a power play goal. Stevens Point then responded 37 seconds later on a Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) (Jr.-Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) goal to give the Pointers a 2-1 advantage. Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) (Jr.-Eden Prairie, MN) and Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) (Jr.-Forest Lake, MN) assisted on the goal.
Stevens Point then extended its lead to 3-1 when Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) (So.-New Richmond) scored with 13:10 remaining in the contest. Jonathan Ralph (Chester, NJ/Shattuck St. Mary's) (Jr.-Chester, NJ/Shattuck St. Mary's) and Paulson assisted on the goal.
The Tommies then made it interesting as they would get a goal right out of a timeout with 1:02 remaining in the third period to cut the Pointer lead to 3-2. However, Chris Conway (Westminster, CO/Northwood) (So.-Westminster, CO/Northwood) with stitches on his face would block a shot and then score an empty net goal with 46 seconds left to give the Pointers the 4-2 victory over the Tommies. Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie), who recorded his third assist of the night, and Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) (Jr.-Ramsey, MN/Anoka) assisted on the goal.
Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) had 39 saves for the Pointers in net to win his second consecutive game. The Tommies out shot the Pointers 41-20 in the contest.
The Pointers will face St. Mary's University (MN) tomorrow night at SMU Ice Arena. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:05 p.m.
