Pointers Shut Down the Falcons in Home Opener

Box Score

STEVENS POINT – The third-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team got one goal in the first period and it proved to be enough as it held on to defeat 10th-ranked UW-River Falls 1-0 tonight at Ice Hawks Arena.

The win improves the Pointers record to 6-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). The Falcons fall to a record of 2-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the NCHA. Tonight's game was the first home contest of the season for the Pointers, who opened the season with five games on the road. The Falcons have played four of their first five games also on the road.

The lone goal of the game took place halfway through the first period when the Pointers had a 2-on-1 breakaway and the first shot attempt by Jessica Edward (Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) (So.-Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's, MN) was wide of the net and the puck ricocheted off the boards to the other side of the net where Katy Lankey (Baraboo/Baraboo) (Sr.-Baraboo) put it in. It was Lankey's first goal of the season.

Pointer goaltender Ann Hulme (Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter (NH)) (So.-Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter, NH) then shut the door on the Falcons the rest of the night as she stopped all 20 shots she faced, including a couple of key saves in the third period to preserve the win. The Pointers hung on to win by a score of 1-0. The shutout is the first of Hulme's career.

Both teams combined for 11 penalties in the contest and both were 0-for-11 on the power play. Cassi Campbell stopped 24 shots for River Falls in the defeat.

The Pointers will face the Falcons once again tomorrow afternoon with action beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Ice Hawks Arena.
