MENOMONIE – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team scored first, but the eighth-ranked UW-Stout Blue Devils scored the next four on its way to defeating the Pointers 6-3 at Dunn County Ice Arena.
The loss drops the Pointers to a record of 5-3-0 and 1-2-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). The Blue Devils improve to 9-1-1 overall and 2-1-0 in conference action. The Pointers have now lost five straight to the Blue Devils.
Stevens Point took the lead early when Tim Manthey (Anoka, MN/Anoka) (Jr.-Anoka, MN) scored on the power play just 4:36 into the contest. Russell Law (Bay City, MI/Shattuck (MN)) (Jr.-Bay City, MI/Shattuck) and Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) (Jr.-Ramsey, MN/Anoka) had the assists. However, the Blue Devils responded in a big way, scoring 1:18 second later to tie the contest and then scoring a shorthanded goal and a power play goal in the first period to take a 3-1 lead at the first intermission. Stevens Point outshot the Blue Devils 14-11 in the period.
Stout then extended its lead to 4-1 six minutes into the second period. The Pointers scored their second goal of the contest when Manthey scored his second goal of the game with 5:33 left in the second period. However, Stout got that goal right back 30 seconds later to make the score 5-2. Once again the Pointers outshot the Blue Devils 14-12.
Halfway through the third period Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) put the puck in the net on the power play to cut the Stout lead to 5-3. The Blue Devils then scored a power play goal of their own with a little over five minutes left to make the final score 6-3.
Stevens Point outshot Stout 40-38 in the game. Both teams combined for 26 penalties with the Pointers committing 14 and the Blue Devils committing 12. The Pointers were 2-for-8 on the power play, while the Blue Devils were 4-for-8.
Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) (Jr.-Eden Prairie, MN) had 32 saves in the loss for Stevens Point. Matt Koenig had 37 saves for Stout in the win.
The Pointers will face top-ranked UW-River Falls tomorrow night at Hunt Arena. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:05 p.m.
