NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The No. 7-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team scored all three of its goals in the second period on its way to a 3-2 win over St. Olaf College in tonight season opener at Northfield Ice Arena.
The Oles would score first tonight, getting the only goal of the first period on a Kayla Hill even-handed goal. Even though Stevens Point trailed after the first period, it still dominated the period outshooting the Oles 16-4.
The Pointers finally got on the scoreboard four and a half minutes into the second period when Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) scored to tie the contest. Tracy Butler (Marshfield/Marshfield) had the assist. With just a little over seven minutes remaining in the second period, the Pointers took the lead for good on a Jessica Edwards (Casco, MI/Richmond) goal to make the score 2-1. Butler had the assist again. Then with 4:55 remaining in the second period Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) scored an unassisted goal to make the score 3-1 Pointers.
The Oles cut the lead to one halfway through the third period on a Laura Wild powerplay goal, but the Pointers hung on the rest of the way to win by a score of 3-2.
The Pointers out shot the Oles 34-12 in the contest. Ann Hulme (Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter (NH)) had 10 saves to earn the win, while Erin McNamara had 31 saves in the defeat. The Pointers committed five penalties compared to St. Olaf's two. Stevens Point went 0-for-2 on the powerplay. The Oles were 1-for-5.
The Pointers will face third-ranked Gustavus Adolphus (MN) tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
