UWSP Women Take Down No. 3 Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. – The No. 7 –ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team defeated third-ranked Gustavus Adolphus 5-1 today at Dan Roberts Rink.


The Pointers improve to 2-0-0 on the season, while Gustavus falls to 0-1-0. The Gusties outshot the Pointers in the game 35-12, but great goaltending by d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) kept the Pointers in front. Phillips finished with 34 saves in the victory.


The Pointers got on the scoreboard first when Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) scored an even handed goal 7:21 into the contest to make the score 1-0. Then just three minutes later Trish Piskula (Antigo/Antigo) scored an even handed goal to put the Pointers up 2-0. Jenna Daggit (St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove) and Jessica Edwards (Casco, MI/Richmond) had the assists.


Edwards then got a goal of her own, a powerplay goal three minutes into the second period to make the score 3-0. Daggit had the assist again. Jessica Edward (Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) extended the Pointer advantage to 4-0 on a goal with 1:41 remaining in the second period.


The Gusties got on the scoreboard in the third period with a powerplay goal by Jenny Pusch. However, the Pointers sealed the deal when Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) scored an empty net goal in the final minute to give the Pointers a 5-1 victory.

 
The Pointers capitalized on their only powerplay, while the Gusties were just 1-for-8.


Next up for the Pointers is trip to Hancock, Michigan Saturday, November 17th and Sunday, November 18th to face Finlandia. Saturday's matchup gets underway at 2 p.m. local time.
