Pointers Drop a Close One in the WIAC Championship

EAU CLAIRE – After a scoreless 75 minutes, UW-Eau Claire would score the only goal of the game to defeat the 22nd-ranked UW-Stevens Point soccer team in the championship match of the 2007 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Soccer Tournament.

 
The victory gives the 15th-ranked Blugolds the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. It is the third straight WIAC Tournament championship for Eau Claire. The Pointers have a good resume with a record of 15-4-1 and may receive one of the 18 at-large bids for the tourney. The announcement of the selection for the Division III tournament will be will be a 10 p.m. eastern time on Sunday night.


In a defensive struggle, the Blugolds outshot the Pointers 10-8 in the match. After a scoreless first half, the lone goal of the match came at 75:39 when the Blugolds' Jamie Schiesel scored off an assist from Allison Muer. The Pointers would get two shots after the goal, but they were both wide as the Blugolds hung on to win 1-0.


Meredith DeCaluwe (Naperville, IL/Central) had five saves in the defeat for the Pointers. Even though Amanda Prawat (Oregon/Oregon) didn't score in the championship match her six goals in the first two matches of the tournament tie a WIAC tournament record.


The NCAA Division III Tournament begins on Wednesday, November 7th with four first round matches. The other first round matches will take place on Saturday, November 10th. Be sure to check the UW-Stevens Point athletic web site for tournament information.
