Pointers Pickup Back-to-Back Shutouts

Box Score

STEVENS POINT – For the first time since the 1997-98 season the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team has earned back-to-back shutouts with a 9-0 victory over Concordia University (WI) tonight at Willett Arena.

The Pointers shut out Lake Forest 9-0 last Saturday and repeated that performance tonight. Stevens Point goaltender Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison), who was also in net last Saturday, earns his second consecutive shutout. The last time the Pointers had back-to-back shutouts was a 5-0 and a 1-0 victory in a home-and-home series with UW-Stout during the 1997-98 season.

The scoring got started just three minutes in as Garrett Suter (Madison/Oregon) (Fr.-Madison/Oregon) put one in the net on a delayed penalty to make the score 1-0 Pointers. Taylor Guay (Boulder, CO/Boulder) (Jr.-Boulder, CO) had the assist. Then with 11 minutes left in the first period Russell Law (Bay City, MI/Shattuck (MN)) (Jr.-Bay City, MI/Shattuck St. Mary's) scored a power play goal to make the score 2-0. Tim Manthey (Anoka, MN/Anoka) (Jr.-Anoka, MN) and Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) (So.-New Richmond) had the assists. Calleja then added a power play goal of his own with 6:26 remaining in the first period to make the score 3-0 at the first intermission. Manthey and Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) (Jr.-Ramsey, MN/Anoka) assisted the goal. The Pointers out shot the Falcons 21-2 in the first period and that would be the theme the rest of the night.

In the second period, the Pointers made the score 4-0 when Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) (So.-Schaumburg, IL) scored a wrap-around goal. Law had the assist. Reed Lally (Duluth, MN/East) (So.-Duluth, MN/East) then scored with over three minutes left in the second period to make the score 5-0. Chris Conway (Westminster, CO/Northwood) (So.-Westminster, CO/Northwood) added another power play goal with less than a minute in the second period to make the score 6-0 at the second intermission. The Pointers outshot the Falcons 25-7 in the second period.

Calleja then scored a spectacular goal for his second goal of the night to make the score 7-0 with under seven minutes remaining in the third period. Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) (Jr.-Forest Lake, MN) and Jonathan Ralph (Chester, NJ/Shattuck St. Mary's) (Jr.-Chester, NJ/Shattuck St. Mary's) scored the final two goals for Stevens Point to make the final score 9-0.

The Pointers ended the game outshooting the Falcons 65-16. The 65 shots are five fewer than the all-time record of 70 the Pointers had against St. Norbert in 1991. The game featured 22 combined penalties for a total of 66 minutes.

Stevens Point improves to 5-2-0 overall this season, while Concordia, in just its first season of hockey, falls to 1-6-0 overall.

The Pointers will be in action again Friday when they travel to face No. 8 UW-Stout. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30 p.m.
