STEVENS POINT – The third-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team used a 20-2 run in the first half on its way to defeating Lakeland College 76-38 tonight at Quandt Fieldhouse.
The Pointers improve to 3-0, while Lakeland drops to 0-3. Stevens Point improves to 14-2 all-time against the Muskies and is 62-6 all-time against teams from the Northern Athletics Conference.
Lakeland came out with a lot of intensity tonight as they would get seven offensive rebounds on their first four possessions. However, with the score 8-8 the Pointers would get hot hitting three consecutive field goals, including a pair of three-pointers to make the score 16-8 with 15:07 left in the first half.
Lakeland cut the score to 16-11 following a timeout, but that's as close the Muskies got because over the next 12 minutes, Stevens Point outscored the Muskies 20-2 to make the score 36-13. The Pointers went into halftime with a 43-16 advantage.
The Pointers shot 49 % from the field in the first half, while the Muskies were at just 25 %. Stevens Point was 7-for-15 from beyond the arc in the half and forced 12 Lakeland turnovers that led to 15 Pointer points.
The Pointers continued their onslaught in the second half as their lead grew to as much as 45 with 4:19 left in the game. The Muskies cut that margin down, but would still lose by a final score of 76-38.
Stevens Point shot just 20 % in the second half to finish at 36 % for the game. The Pointers defense however, held the Muskies to 21 % in the second half and 23 % for the game. Stevens Point scored 26 points off of 22 Lakeland turnovers, while the Muskies just had three points off of 11 Pointer turnovers.
Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Jr.-Minocqua/Lakeland) and Steve Hicklin (Sussex/Hamilton) (Sr.-Sussex/Hamilton) each had 13 points to lead Stevens Point. Rortvedt just missed a double-double as he had a team-high nine rebounds. Matt Moses (Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) (So.-Fond du Lac/St. Mary's Springs) matched a career-high with 12 points off the bench for the Pointers, while Jerome Wotachek (Mishicot/Mishicot) (Jr.-Mishicot) had a career-high five blocks. In fact, it was the most blocks in a game by any Pointer since now Pointer assistant coach Jason Kalsow had five against York College on March 18, 2005. Anthony Cobb led the Muskies with 13 points.
The Pointers will begin Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action next weekend when they travel to face UW-Whitewater on Saturday. The game will begin at approximately 5 p.m. following the women's game.
