EAU CLAIRE – The 22nd-ranked UW-Stevens Point soccer team got up early and never looked back as it defeated UW-Whitewater this afternoon 3-2 in a semifinal match of the 2007 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Soccer Tournament at the Bollinger Fields.

The Pointers move on to face UW-Eau Claire in the WIAC Championship, who defeated UW-La Crosse 5-1 earlier today. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Earlier this season the Blugolds rallied to defeat the Pointers 4-3 in overtime at the Pointer Soccer Bowl. In that match, Stevens Point had a 3-0 lead. It was the first time since October 16, 1987 that the Pointers had lost a game in which they had scored three or more goals.

The Pointers jumped out quickly on the Warhawks, scoring just 41 seconds into the game when Amanda Prawat (Oregon/Oregon) (Jr.-Oregon) scored her 23rd goal of the season. Prawat then scored again at 32:41 to make the score 2-0 UWSP. Kaylee Weise (Brookfield/East) (Jr.-Brookfield/East) assisted on the goal. Prawat the conference leading goal scorer has now had 15 goals in the last six games, including six goals so far in the WIAC Tournament.

The Warhawks cut the lead to 2-1 just before the half on a Jenna Samp goal with a little over three minutes to play in the first half. Both teams could only muster four shots apiece in the first half.
The Pointers got some breathing room in the 63rd minute when Kaylee Weise (Brookfield/East) scored an unassisted goal to give the Pointers a 3-1 advantage. The Warhawks got a goal with a minute remaining when Holly U'ren put one over the goalkeepers head to make the score 3-2. However, it was too little too late as the Pointers hung on for a 3-2 win to advance into the championship match against top-seeded UW-Eau Claire.

The WIAC Championship match gets underway at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Bollinger Fields in Eau Claire.
