HANCOCK, Mich. – The third-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team shut down Finlandia today, defeating the Lions 6-0 to complete the two-game sweep.
The Pointers improve to 4-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). The Lions drop to 3-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the NCHA. The Pointers have now beaten Finlandia all eight times they have faced.
After a scoreless first period, Stevens Point started to pour it on in the second. Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Jr.-Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) scored 2:37 into the period to make the score 1-0. Jess Suter (Waunakee/Waunakee) (Sr. Waunakee) and Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) (Fr.-Burnsville, MN) had the assists. Then Suter put one in the net herself at 14:49 to give the Pointers a 2-0 advantage. Katy Lankey (Baraboo/Baraboo) (Sr.-Baraboo) and Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) (So.-Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) assisted on the goal. Then with less than four minutes remaining Jamie Lewandowski (Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd) (Sr.-Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd) scored a power play goal to give Stevens Point a 3-0 lead. Carothers and Sarah Phillips (Kelowna, B.C./St. George's School (RI)) (So.-Kelowna, B.C./St. George's School) had the assists.
Grossmann added another goal, her fifth of the season, on the power play just 29 seconds into the third period to extend the Pointer lead to 4-0. Carothers and Phillips had the assists again. Jessica Edward (Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) (So.-Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's) then scored an unassisted goal with less than five minutes remaining to make the score 5-0. Nelson gave the Pointers their final goal with 29 seconds left in the period as Stevens Point went on to win 6-0. Jenna Daggit (St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove) (Jr.-St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove) assisted the final goal.
The Pointers were 2-for-2 on the power play on the day and outshot the Lions 36-16. d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) (So.-Swartz Creek, MI) picked up her first shutout of the season with 16 saves in the victory.
The Pointers will play their fifth and final road game before their home opener when they face Augsburg College (MN) Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
