STEVENS POINT – The 24th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team won its seventh Pointer Tip-off today with an 81-30 victory over the College of St. Scholastica (MN) at Berg Gym.
The Pointers improve to 2-0 this young season and defeat the Saints for the second time in the tip-off championship game. It was the largest margin of victory in a tip-off title game. St. Scholastica falls to a record of 1-1.
Stevens Point scored the first six points of the game and would never trail the rest of the way. From the 15:54-mark to the 2:33-mark in the first half, the Pointers outscored the Saints 28-6 and went into halftime with a 41-17 advantage.
The Saints had one more turnover than points in the first half with 18 and Pointers converted those turnovers to 25 points. Stevens Point's bench had an 18-4 advantage in points in the first half. The Pointers also put in 16 second-chance baskets.
The second half was no different as Stevens Point used a 17-0 run that spanned over nine minutes to take a 60-20 lead with 9:31 remaining. The Pointers extended the lead to 52 at one point in the half and would win easily by a score of 81-30.
The Pointers finished with 48 points off of 30 St. Scholastica turnovers. Stevens Point shot 43% for the game, while the Saints shot 23%. The Pointer bench contributed 49 of the 81 points. All but two Pointers scored in the game.
The Pointers showed their balance as nobody scored in double figures, but Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) (Sr.-Wausau/East), Ashley Windt (Hurley/Hurley) (Jr.-Hurley), and Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Jr.-Mineral Point) all had nine points to lead the team. Jesirae Heuer (Wisconsin Rapids/Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) (Sr.-Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) had a team-high seven rebounds. Jessica Nichols led the Saints with seven points. Janell Van Gomple (DeForest/DeForest) (Jr.-DeForest) received the tournament's most valuable player award. Sporle and Houghton were named to the five-member all-tournament team.
The Pointers will host Wisconsin Lutheran Tuesday night at Berg Gym. The tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
