STEVENS POINT-One of the most important jobs as a captain is to lead his team after a tough defeat. UW-Stevens Point's Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) (Jr.-Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) did just that on Saturday night at Willet Ice Arena. Beckfeld scored a career-high four goals and added two assists as the Pointers cruised to a 9-0 victory over Lake Forest College.
Stevens Point came out flat in the first 19:55 but that all changed when Stevens Point junior Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) found senior Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) (Jr.-Forest Lake, MN) to score with five seconds remaining in the period.
The late first period goal sparked the Pointers who scored five goals in the second period. The Pointers needed only 4:30 in the second period before Beckfeld found Ross Johnson (International Falls, MN/Falls) (Jr.-International Falls, MN) to make it 2-0. At the 5:34 mark the Pointers added their first of four power play goals on the night when Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) (Jr.-Ramsey. MN/Anoka) scored off of a Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) (So.-New Richmond) assist.
Beckfeld then dazzled the Willet crowd with an array of defense-splitting moves scoring the next three Pointer goals to stretch the lead to 6-0 going into the final intermission.
Pointer goalie Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.Janesville/James Madison) earned his first shut-out of his college career stoping all 26 shots he faced.
The shutout was the Pointers first since the 2002-03 season when the Pointers shutout the Milwaukee School of Engineering 8-0.
