STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team scored 52 second half points on its way to a convincing 85-60 victory tonight over Augsburg College in the semifinals of the 2007 Pointer Tip-Off.
The Pointers advance to the tip-off championship game for the 10th time in the 11-year history of the tournament. Augsburg, whose only appearance in the tip-off was the inaugural tip-off in 1997, drops its 21st straight game, dating back to last year.
Augsburg, who only won one game last season, hung in the game early, but the Pointers used a 7-0 run with three minutes remaining to extend its lead to 33-22. The Pointers went into halftime with a 33-24 advantage. Stevens Point had a 12-2 edge in the paint and out-rebounded the Auggies 23-16 in the half.
The Pointers started out the second half outscoring the Auggies 13-3 to grow their lead to 19 with less than 16 minutes remaining. The Pointers shot 56% from the field in the second half. Stevens Point's biggest lead of the contest was the final score as the Pointers went on to win 85-60.
The Pointers shot 47% from the field for the game and were 9-for-25 on three-point attempts. Augsburg shot 39% from the field and was 5-for-12 from beyond the arc. Stevens Point had a 22-6 scoring advantage in the paint and scored 25 points off of 26 Auggie turnovers.
Janell Van Gomple (DeForest/DeForest) (
Jr.-DeForest) led the Pointers with 12 points, while
Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) (
Sr.-Wausau/East) and
Christin Coles (Hustisford/Hustisford) (
Fr.-Hustisford) chipped in 10 points.
Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (
Jr.-Mineral Point) had eight rebounds to lead the Pointers on the glass. Augsburg's Christa Suedbeck led all scorers with 14 points. The Pointers had 13 different players that scored.
The Pointers will look for their seventh tip-off title tomorrow when they face the College of St. Scholastica (MN) at 3 p.m. in Berg Gym. It will be a rematch of the 2005 title game.
