CHICAGO – Kaylee Weise (Brookfield/East) (Jr.-Brookfield/East) scored with 15 seconds left in the second overtime to propel the UW-Stevens Point soccer team into the second round of NCAA Division III Soccer Tournament with a 3-2 victory over the College of St. Benedict (MN) today.
The Pointers move on to face the University of Chicago in the second round tomorrow. The Maroons defeated the Aurora University (IL) 1-0 also in overtime prior to Stevens Point's contest. The Pointers defeated the Maroons 2-1 earlier this season. Prior to that loss, the Maroons had won 20 consecutive home matches.
The Pointers got the scoring started in the 21st minute when Amanda Prawat (Oregon/Oregon) (Jr.-Oregon) scored her 25th goal of the season to give Stevens Point a 1-0 advantage. Alison Regal (Appleton/East) (Sr.-Appleton/East) had the assist. The Pointers had a slight advantage in shots at 7-6 in the first half.
In the second half, the Blazers tied it up on a header by Rachel Loftus at 54:24. Prawat then put the Pointers back in front scoring a goal off a rebound in the 65th minute. Prawat's 26 goals this season is the second most in school history. Then with 7:20 remaining, the Blazers tied the match back up on a Tina Lisk goal. The score remained tied after 90 minutes and the match went into overtime.
In the first overtime, the Pointers got off the only shot, but the contest remained tied and the match went to a second overtime. With 15 seconds left before penalty kicks decided the match, Kaylee Weise (Brookfield/East) scored off a cross to send the Pointers into the second round with a 3-2 victory.
The Pointers out shot the Blazers 19-17 in the match. Meredith DeCaluwe (Naperville, IL/Central) (Sr.-Naperville, IL/Central) had eight saves in the victory.
The Pointers and Maroons get underway at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the University of Chicago.
