WINONA, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team surpassed last year's road win total tonight, defeating St. Mary's University 3-1 at SMU Ice Arena.
The Pointers have won three straight games and are now 3-1-0 overall. The last time Stevens Point won three straight contests was back in the 2005-06 season. The last time the Pointers won back-to-back road games in the same season was in 2003-04. The Cardinals fall to a record of 0-3-1.
The Cardinals scored first tonight early in the first period when Anthony Bohn scored an evenhanded goal just over a minute into the contest. The Pointers tied the game up at 4:37 in the first period when Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) (So.-Schaumburg, IL) put one in the net. Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) (So.-New Richmond) had the assist.
In the second period, the Pointers capitalized on the power play as Tim Manthey (Anoka, MN/Anoka) (Jr.-Anoka, MN) scored with 2:06 left in the period to give the Pointers a 2-1 lead. Calleja and Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) (Jr.-Ramsey, MN/Anoka) assisted on the goal. The Pointers dominated the second period outshooting the Cardinals 13-4.
Then in the third period, Stevens Point added insurance when Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) (Jr.-Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) scored another power play goal at 4:33 to make the score 3-1. That is how the game would end as the Pointers win again by a score of 3-1.
Stevens Point outshot the Cardinals 25-24 in the game. Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison) had 23 saves to pickup his first collegiate win.
The Pointers return home next weekend as they will St. Norbert College to open conference play at Willett Arena on Friday night. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
