WINNECONNE – The ninth-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's cross country team finished second with 76 points today at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships next weekend.
A total of 32 teams qualify for the Division III championships. To qualify a team must finish in the top two places in one of the eight regionals. The Pointers did that by placing second. UW-La Crosse won the regional with 70 points. North Central College (IL) was third with 118 points and Augustana (IL) was fourth with 152 points. UW-Platteville was fifth with 178 points. Only the top five teams from each regional will be considered for at-large births.
Cory Towle (Waukesha/South) (Jr.-Waukesha/South) led the Pointers by finishing fifth with a time of 24:23. Dominick Meyer (Beloit/Memorial) (Jr.-Beloit/Memorial) also placed in the top ten as he finished ninth in a time of 24:39. Phil Richert (Andover, MN/Andover) (Jr.-Andover, MD) was the next Pointer runner to finish as he placed 12th, posting a time of 24:45. Brandon Dworak (Denmark/Denmark) (So.-Denmark) finished 21st and Travis Nechuta (Mosinee/Mosinee) (Jr.-Mosinee) was 29th.
The Pointers will compete next Saturday at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships hosted by St. Olaf College (MN). The men's race begins at noon.
