Pointers Qualify for National Tournament with Conference Title

The UW-Stevens Point women's golf team qualified for its first ever national tournament as a team by winning the overall title at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament this weekend in Watertown.

The Pointers shot a weekend total of 656 to easily defeat second-place UW-Oshkosh who finished with a 687. Two-time defending conference champs, UW-Eau Claire, finished in fourth.

The Pointers had three ladies place in the top five individually. Both Freshman Michelle Pascavis (Waukesha/South) and Sophomore Jessica Urban (Hartland/Arrowhead) came up one stroke short of the individual championship. Pascavis fired a second day 83 and Urban shot a 78 on the second day both scoring a weekend total of 160. Sophomore Amy Stiloski (Brookfield/Central) shot a followed up a first day 81 with an 83 today to finish in fourth place. Amanda Dlugopolski (Appleton/East) finished in a tie for seventh and was the only other Pointer golfer to finish in the top ten.

Sarah Mosher (Evansville/Evansville) shot a combined score of 172 to finish in a tie for 14th and Katie Kautz (Des Plaines, Ill./St. Viator) placed tied for 17th shooting back to back 74's for the Pointers.

UW-Stevens Point head coach Matt Interbartolo was voted the Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

The WIAC title is the first for the Pointers since 1997. The national tournament will be held May 13-16, 2008 at Centennial Oaks Golf Club in Waverly, Iowa.
