Pointers Take One, but Fall to Third-Ranked Warhawks

UW-Stevens Point pulled out a third-game victory, but fell victim to third-ranked UW-Whitewater for the 32nd straight time in a 3-1 volleyball loss on Wednesday in Stevens Point.

After dropping the first two games 30-20 and 30-21, the Pointers pulled out a 33-31 victory in the third game, winning on their fourth game point opportunity. However, UW-Whitewater used an 11-point spurt in the fourth game for a 30-12 win.

The win was the Warhawks' eighth straight as they improved to 17-2 overall and 3-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-Stevens Point had won 10 of its last 11 matches since an early-season loss to UW-Whitewater and dropped to 13-6 overall and 2-1 in the league. The Pointers' third-game win was the first game they've taken at home from UW-Whitewater since Sept. 18, 1985.

The Pointers trailed 24-20 in the third game, but then rattled off five straight points. The lead was never bigger than one point the rest of the way until a UW-Whitewater hitting error ended the game.

The Warhawks led the first game 18-17 and then went on a 9-2 run for a 27-19 lead. UW-Whitewater carried the momentum by opening the second game with a 10-3 surge. The Warhawks had 18 kills with just one hitting error in the fourth game for a .459 hitting percentage.

UW-Whitewater's Abby Schultz led all players with 18 kills and Sarah Theis had 15 kills. Kate Lazotte had 50 assists and Kristina Conlin totaled 24 digs. Shelly Maus (Green Bay/Green Bay Southwest) led UW-Stevens Point with 13 kills, while Jill Wittmann (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) had 30 assists and 16 digs.
