UWSP Falls at UW-La Crosse in WIAC Finale

LA CROSSE – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team had a chance to clinch fourth place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC), but fell short to No. 17 UW-La Crosse tonight by a score of 3-1 at Mitchell Hall.


The loss means the Pointers will have to travel back to La Crosse next Tuesday for the first round of the WIAC Conference Tournament. The loss also snaps a five-match win streak for Stevens Point, who falls to 21-11 overall and 4-4 in the conference. The Eagles defeat the Pointers for the 17th time in the last 18 meetings and improve to 21-8 overall and 4-4 in the WIAC.


The Eagles came out and took game one by a score of 30-21. La Crosse had a .244 attack percentage in the game, compared to .157 for the Pointers. Stevens Point then came back to take game two by a score of 30-26. The Pointers had 17 kills in the game.


However, the Eagles would take game three by a score of 30-23. The Pointers committed seven errors in the game. La Crosse then closed out the match in game four, defeating the Pointers 30-26. The Pointers had 20 kills in the final game, the most in a game by either team.


Shelly Maus (Green Bay/Green Bay Southwest) led all players with 17 kills. Maus also had four blocks and 12 digs. Pam Nora (Forest Lake, Minn./) added 12 kills for the Pointers. Jill Wittmann (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) had a team-high 48 assists. The Eagles were led by Amber Schoonover with 14 kills.


Next up the Pointers will host a triangular at Berg Gym on Saturday. UWSP will face UW-Stout at 11 a.m. to begin action. MSOE then will face UW-Stout at 1 p.m. and the Pointers will face MSOE at 3 p.m.
