UWSP Takes Pointer Invitational Title

Day Two Notes

STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point Volleyball team finished the Pointer Invitational at 4-0 after defeating Luther College (IA) 3-2 and Viterbo University 3-1 today at Berg Gym.

 
The Pointers came from behind and narrowly defeated Luther College in five games 31-29, 25-30, 17-30, 30-27, 16-14 to begin the day. Shelly Maus (Green Bay/Green Bay Southwest) had 18 kills and five blocks to lead the Pointers. Jasmine Johnson (Appleton/East) added 12 kills, while Jill Wittmann (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) had 35 assists. The Norse were led by Leah Sikora, who had 22 kills.


Stevens Point then faced Viterbo in the championship match of the tournament. The Pointers would take the match in four tightly contested games 30-27, 28-30, 31-29, 30-28. Maus once again led the Pointers with 18 kills. Jill Wittmann (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) had 44 assists, nine digs, seven kills, and five blocks. The V-Hawks were led by Nicole Valencia with 13 kills.


Maus was named the invite's most valuable player after collecting 70 kills in four games. Wittmann was named to the five-member all-tournament team.


The Pointers have now won five straight matches and are 21-10 overall. They will hit the road and face UW-La Crosse on Wednesday Night. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
