Pointers Win Streak Snapped By Third-Ranked Warhawks

STEVENS POINT – The second longest win streak in Division III is no longer as No. 3 UW-Whitewater defeated No. 20 UW-Stevens Point 31-14 today at Goerke Field.


The Pointers came into the contest having won 10 consecutive games overall and seven Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) games. Whitewater, on the other hand continues its dominance over the WIAC winning its 19 consecutive conference game.


The Pointers got off to a quick start driving down the field on their opening possession. Stevens Point converted three third downs, including a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jake Swank (Oregon/Oregon)  to Brad Kalsow (Huntley, Ill./Huntley)  on 3rd-and-9 to make the score 7-0.


The Warhawks answered with a nine play 69-yard drive capped off on a John Novak 13-yard touchdown reception. Whitewater would take lead with over nine minutes remaining in the second quarter on a Jeff Schebler 31-yard field goal to make the score 10-7. The Warhawks extended their lead to 17-7 with over four minutes remaining in the half on a 26-yard touchdown reception by Neil Mrkvicka from Danny Jones.

On the next Stevens Point possession Swank connected with Kalsow for 66 yards down to the Warhawk three yard line. Three plays later Mike Ferron (Racine/Horlick) plunged in from one yard out to make the score 17-14 at the half.

 
The second half belonged to the Warhawks as they would have three drives over five minutes in the half. They took the opening drive 70 yards on 14 plays and Jones connected with Mrkvicka for the second time on the day for a four-yard touchdown pass to put the Warhawks up 24-14. Whitewater then put the game away with three minutes to play in the third quarter as Jones connected with Aaron Rusch for a 35-yard touchdown pass to make the score 31-14. That is how the game would end as the Warhawks improved to 7-1 this season and 5-0 in conference action. The Pointers drop to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the WIAC.


Swank threw for 236 yards on 18-of-37 passing with one touchdown. Kalsow and Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee/Rufus King) each had seven catches apiece for the Pointers. Kalsow had 125 yards receiving and one touchdown, while Jenkins had 97 yards. Ferron rushed for 90 yards on 22 carries and one touchdown. Tyler Florczak (Chetek/Chetek)  led the Pointer defense with 13 tackles.

 
The Warhawks were led by running back Justin Beaver, who rushed for 216 yards on 41 carries. Jones threw for 239 yards and four touchdowns as Whitewater outgained the Pointers 492-243.


The Pointers will travel to face UW-Oshkosh next Saturday. The kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Titan Stadium.
