STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team defeated both Carroll College and Viterbo University by scores of 3-1 tonight on the first day of the Pointer Invitational in Berg Gym.
The Pointers took the first match of the night over Carroll College in four games 30-27, 28-30, 30-25, 30-16. Stevens Point trailed 23-21 in game one, but then rallied off six straight points to take a 27-23 lead. Then the Pioneers responded with four straight points to tie it at 27, but the Pointers would take the final three points of the game to win 30-27.
The Pioneers would take game two, hanging on to win by a score of 30-28. Carroll then had the lead early in the fourth game, but the Pointers came back and took game three 30-25. The Pointer momentum continued into the fourth game as they cruised to a 30-16 win.
Shelly Maus (Green Bay/Green Bay Southwest) (Sr.-Green Bay/Southwest) led the Pointers with 23 kills, while Jill Wittmann (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) (Sr.-Kewaskum) had 55 assists. Jasmine Johnson (Appleton/East) (Fr.-Appleton/East) added 14 kills for Stevens Point.
Stevens Point then jumped out quick on Viterbo winning game one 30-19 and game two 30-18. The V-Hawks fought back to take game three by a score of 30-27. However in the end it was too much Point as the Pointers defeated the V-Hawks 30-16 in the fourth game to take the match.
Jasmine Johnson (Appleton/East) led Stevens Point with 16 kills. Amanda Mix (Brookfield/East) (Jr.-Brookefield/East) had 14 kills and Shelly Maus (Green Bay/Green Bay Southwest) added 11 kills. Mix and Johnson had 12 digs apiece.
The Pointers will face Luther College at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
