Pointers Upset No. 4-ranked UW-Oshkosh

STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team shocked fourth-ranked UW-Oshkosh tonight, defeating the Titans in five games 24-30, 30-28, 11-30, 30-28, 15-10 at Berg Gymnasium.
It was the first win over the Titans since the 1998 season. Prior to tonight, the Titans had swept the Pointers in every match since the 2001 season. The Pointers improve to 17-10 overall and 4-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Titans drop to 25-3 overall and 4-1 in the WIAC.
The Titans took game one by a score of 30-24. The Titans had 17 kills and .389 attack percentage. The Pointers came back to take game two by a score of 30-28. Oshkosh then came back to win game three by a convincing 30-11 score. The Pointers committed nine errors, while only having three kills.
Stevens Point stayed alive to win game four by a score of 30-28. The score was tied 28-28 before the Pointers took the final two points. The Pointers had 15 kills and committed just two errors.
Game five belonged to the Pointers, as they had their best hitting game of the match when it counted with 10 kills and just one error to win by a score of 15-10.
Beth Richter (Green Bay/Preble) (Sr.-Green Bay/Preble) had 17 kills to lead the Pointers. Shelly Maus (Green Bay/Green Bay Southwest) (Sr.-Green Bay/Southwest) and Gina Guell (Waupun/Waupun) (Jr.-Waupun) each had 13 kills. Richter also led the team with 18 digs. Kim Vail paced Oshkosh with 20 kills.
Next for the Pointers will be the five-team Pointer Invitational this Friday and Saturday. The Pointers will kickoff the invite at 3 p.m. Friday against Viterbo.
