Smith comes to UWSP from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota where he served as the men's and women's assistant coach from January 2022 to October 2025 until he was named the associate men's and women's track and field head coach. During his five seasons at SMU, he led 95 performances to the school's all-time top-10 list, 14 school records, 73 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletics Conference honors and six individual MIAC titles.

Prior to SMU, Smith served as a graduate assistant for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track and field team for one season. He created and implemented practice plans, assisted in strength & conditioning sessions, practice day set-up and fulfilled meet day responsibilities for the Eagles.

Smith has USTFCCCA certifications in jumping, sprint, hurdle and relay events.

Smith graduated from Central College in 2019 with a bachelor of arts in exercise science. He received his master of science in human performance from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse in 2021.
