Rory Suomi, Ph.D. is in his fifth season as head coach of the UW-Stevens Point women's golf team in 2018-19.
In his first season of 2014-15, UW-Stevens Point finished seventh at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships. The Pointers also placed seventh at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational and the UW-Whitewater Spring Fling.
Suomi helped Tiffany Boak earn Second Team All-WIAC honors in 2014, after the sophomore finished in a tie for eighth at the WIAC Championships.
Suomi currently serves as a professor of human anatomy in the School of Physical Education & Athletic Training (PEAT) in the College of Professional Studies. Previously Suomi had served as the Associate Dean of PEAT and was also the interim director of athletics for UWSP during the spring of 2011. He also has served as the men’s golf advisor at UWSP for the past three years.
Suomi, a faculty member at the university for 22 years, is a member of the Wisconsin State Golf Association’s Senior Tour. He recently came in second at the 2015 WSGA State Net Amateur Championship at Oshkosh Country Club. Suomi has won two tour events and finished as runner-up at the 2011 WSGA Senior Tour Championship at Wild Rock Golf Course in Wisconsin Dells.
A student-athlete while attending NCAA Division II Southern Connecticut State University, Suomi was a three-time NCAA cross country qualifier and was also a member of the school’s golf team for a season. Suomi was also a junior club champion at Pomfret Country Club in Pomfret, Connecticut.
Suomi earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State. He then went on to earn his master’s in adapted physical education at Western Illinois University and his Ph.D. in kinesiology from Indiana University.
Suomi lives in Stevens Point and his daughter, Samara, attends UWSP.
