Rick Witt, a 45-year veteran staff member at UWSP, serves as the Director of Cross Country/Track & Field and assists his son Brett in managing all aspects of the men's and women's cross country and track & field programs.

In 2010-11, Witt won Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Coach of the Year honors as the program won its second conference championship in a three-year span. The Pointers finished in third place at the NCAA championships in 2011.  He was inducted into the UWSP Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018.

The Pointers also won the conference in 2008, with Witt taking Coach of the Year honors as well.

In all the Pointers have won four WIAC championships under Witt (1996, 1997, 2008, 2010). Witt earned Coach of the Year honors in each of those seasons, and he also won the honor in 1991-92.

In 2007-08, Witt was named WIAC Coach of the Year in outdoor track & field.

On the national level, UWSP finished in a program-best second place at the 2003 NCAA Division III Championships.

In the spring of 2010, the men's indoor track and field team finished as the NCAA Division III runner-up and the DMR relay team finished as national champions. In the spring of 2002, UWSP posted a fourth place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and an 18th place finish at the NCAA Indoor Nationals. UWSP also posted fourth and sixth place finishes at the 2001 NCAA Championships.

Individually, the Pointers have produced over 20 NCAA National Champions, in both track and field and cross country, along with over 170 All-Americans.

Witt earned both his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Physical Education from the University of Northern Iowa. As an undergraduate, he was a four-time NCAA national qualifier.

Witt has twice served as a coach on the international level, having led a USA cross country team to an international meet in New Zealand, and a USA track & field team to international competition in Europe.
