Set to begin his first season as defensive coordinator for the Pointers, Coach Tom Journell brings a wealth of college coaching experience to UW-Stevens Point.
Prior to UWSP, Journell spent four seasons as the head coach at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Ill. He compiled a 22-18 overall record in his four seasons with the Bluejays, and ranks fifth all-time in Elmhurst history for career wins.
Previously, Journell spent 15 seasons at UW-River Falls, serving primarily as the defensive coordinator. He started with the Falcons in 1989 as the team’s secondary coach and after one season was promoted to defensive coordinator. In 1995, he was again promoted to assistant head coach, a position he held for the next eight seasons.
Journell is also a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He also coached UW-River Falls first national champion in the discus and coached three All-American throwers while serving as the track and field team’s throws coach in 1996.
Prior to coaching at UW-River Falls, Coach Journell spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Miami University (Ohio) where he was an assistant defensive secondary and linebackers coach.
Journell attended NCAA Division III Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, graduating in 1987. He was a four-year participant on the football and baseball teams.
A native of Eaton, Ohio, Coach Journell and his wife, Betsy, have two sons, Mack and Tate.
