KENOSHA, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (0-3) came up short in matches against Centre (4-0) and Carthage (2-2) at the Carthage Tournament on Saturday.
Freshman
Megan Buri (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Durham Hall) posted her first collegiate double-double with 22 assists and 12 digs against Carthage.
Maggie O'Brien (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) notched her second double-double of the season versus Centre with 17 assists and 11 digs.
Samantha Kempinger (Oshkosh, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) and
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had 15 kills each versus Carthage.
UWSP 1, Centre 3 (25-23, 16-25, 23-25, 15-25)
Thomka and
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) had four kills apiece in the first set.
Sadie Grabarski (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee Community) had a pair of kills and Kempinger had two blocks as UWSP used a 7-1 run to take the first set.
Grabarski had two kills in the second set.
Gracie Fregien (Waukesha, Wis./West) served an ace, but the Pointers trailed throughout the second set.
Shaw and Thomka had a pair of kills each early in the third. O'Brien, Buri and Fregien each had an ace.
Danica Lenz (Andover, Minn./Andover) had two kills late as Centre held on for the 25-23 win.
Lenz posted three kills in the fourth set. Grabarski had two blocks and a kill as Centre pulled away to close out the match.
UWSP 2, Carthage 3 (25-21, 24-26, 23-25, 25-15, 9-15)
Thomka had an ace and a block in a 12-3 run in the first. Kempinger added two late kills as UWSP took the opening set.
Thomka and Shaw combined for five kills as UWSP started the second in front, 7-4.
Bella Lucero (Antioch, Ill./Carmel Catholic) had consecutive aces as the Pointers thwarted three set points before Carthage prevailed, 26-24.
Kempinger had six kills in the third set. Thomka added three with Shaw and
Logan Cregan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) posting two each, but Carthage took the 2-1 lead.
Ella Trieloff (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Viator) and Kempinger had two kills each in a 9-1 run late in the fourth. Grabarski had a block and a kill as UWSP forced a fifth set.
Thomka had four kills in the fifth set, but it wasn't enough as Carthage took the match.
The Pointers travel to Oshkosh to face Lawrence and St. Norbert on Wednesday (Sept. 9) beginning at 5:00 p.m.
