KENOSHA, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (0-1) fell in five sets (25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 21-25, 5-15) to Wartburg (1-2) at the Carthage Tournament.
Maggie O'Brien (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) posted her first career double-double with a team-high 24 assists and 17 digs.
Sadie Grabarski (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee Community) led UWSP with 11 kills. Abby Nevin posted a match-best 24 digs.
UWSP used a pair of 5-0 runs in the first set to go up, 1-0.
Delilah Hyland (Glen Ellyn, Ill./IC Catholic Prep) and Grabarski had a kill and a block each in one run. O'Brien served one of her two aces in the match in the other.
Samantha Kempinger (Oshkosh, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) and
Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) each had a service ace as the Pointers took a 12-7 lead in the second. Kempinger added another kill at the end of a 5-0 run and the Pointers went up, 2-0.
Kempinger had two kills early in the third set. The Knights used an 8-1 run to gain the upper hand. O'Brien had an ace late as Wartburg took the set.
Hyland and
Logan Cregan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) had a kill and a block each in a 4-0 run late in the fourth, but UWSP was unable to pull off the comeback.
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township), Cregan and Grabarski each had a kill in the fifth set as Wartburg pulled away to take the match.
The Pointers take on Centre and host-Carthage at 12:00 and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 5) to close out the opening weekend of action.
