HOLLAND, Mich. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (1-1) dropped its first road game of the season at No. 18/20 Hope (2-0) by a 38-10 final.
Ryan Thompson (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) was 12-of-29 for 101 yards and a touchdown on the day.
Zack Lynch (Brussels. Wis./Southern Door) led the rushing attack with 41 yards on eight carries.
Austin Phillips (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) had three catches for a team-high 44 yards.
Zander Popp (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) and
Paul Morris (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) each had nine tackles to lead the defense.
Peyton Schwahn (Reedsville, Wis./Reedsville) and
Denver Treleven (Omro, Wis./Omro) each recorded a sack.
UWSP's first two offensive drives sputtered and the defense forced a three-and-out on Hope's first drive. The Flying Dutch drove down for a go-ahead touchdown with 2:36 left in the opening quarter.
The Pointers benefitted on a roughing the kicker penalty on the second-to-last play of the quarter to extend the drive. Six plays into the second quarter,
Cameron Jochimsen (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) kicked a field goal to get UWSP within 7-3.
UWSP's next drive ended with the only turnover of the game. The Pointers' defense held Hope on the ensuing drive, but UWSP was pinned at its own two on the punt.
A short drive and punt gave the Flying Dutch a short field. Hope needed five plays to find the end zone to put UWSP behind, 14-3, at the half.
Hope scored a touchdown on the first two drives of the second half to put UWSP's deficit at 28-3. As the third quarter wound down, the Pointers put together their longest drive of the game. Thompson completed three passes, including a fourth down conversion to get UWSP to the 13 as the quarter elapsed. On the second play of the fourth quarter, another fourth down, Thompson hit
Ben Wollersheim (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) for a UWSP touchdown.
The UWSP defense halted Hope's next drive and forced a field goal attempt. The Flying Dutch tacked on a late touchdown to complete the scoring.
The Pointers will wrap up non-conference play on Saturday (Sept. 19) in the annual Pink Game for Cancer. Kick off at Goerke Park is slated for 1:00 p.m. against Pacific.
