OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (30-13) won the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) on Saturday for the just the third time in program history. UWSP defeated host No. 14 UW-Oshkosh () in the semifinals by a 2-1 final. In the championship game, the Pointers beat UW-Platteville () by a 5-2 score. The WIAC Tournament title is the first for UWSP since 2001 and the Pointers were the first five-seed to win the tournament.
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) fired a complete-game one-hitter in the semifinal win over UWO. She earned the save in the title game with 2.2 shutout innings allowing just one hit.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) had three hits and
Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) had two hits on the day. Roberts scored a run in each game. Smith had an RBI in the title game.
Semifinal – UWSP 2, UW-Oshkosh 1
Roberts was the game's first base runner with a one-out single in the fourth.
Rachael Madsen (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) and Smith each singled and a miscue in center gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead.
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) reached on a bunt to make it 2-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Titans spoiled Rizzo's perfect game bid with a leadoff walk. With two away, the Titans' lone hit of the game plated a run to make it 2-1.
Rizzo shut down UWO the rest of the way. She struck out eight and allowed just one hit and one walk.
Final – UWSP 5, UWP 2
Otto started the second inning with an infield single. Two batters later,
Ashley LeCavalier (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) hit a two-run home run.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) followed with a solo home run and UWSP had a 3-0 lead.
Hailee Thomspon drew a walk to start the fourth. Two batters later, Roberts doubled to put two in scoring position. A sac fly by Madsen extended the lead to 4-0.
The Pioneers got two runs in the fifth on two hits and left two aboard as UWSP maintained the lead at 4-2.
Roberts started the seventh with a single. She moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Smith to make it 5-2.
Harwood started and went 4.1 innings. She struck out three. Rizzo finished the game with 2.2 innings and two strikeouts.
