EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (8-12, 2-8) split a doubleheader at UW-Eau Claire (13-7, 6-2) on Wednesday. UWSP took game one by a 6-3 final and dropped game two, 4-3.
Cooper Brown (Appleton, Wis./West) and
Braylen Nystrom (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) had four hits and home run each on the day.
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Tommy Drohner (Plover, Wis./SPASH) added three hits apiece.
Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) tied a career-high by striking out 10 to earn the win in game one.
Game 1 – UWSP 6, UWEC 3
Olson singled to begin the third inning. He moved to third on a pair of groundouts.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) drove him in with a two-out hit and UWSP had a 1-0 lead.
Nystrom started the fourth inning with a triple to right-center. Two batters later,
Drew Mistele (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) hit a sac fly. Olson followed with a single and stole second.
Easton Snow (DeForest, Wis./DeForest Area) singled to give the Pointers a 3-0 advantage.
Mistele led off the sixth with a solo home run to give the Pointers a 4-0 lead.
Brown homered to lead off the seventh. Nystrom doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central). A wild pitch allowed him to score for a 7-0 lead.
UWEC scored twice in the seventh and added a run in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Ehr picked up his first win of the season with 7.0 innings pitched in his first start of the year. He matched a career-high with 10 strikeouts and walked just one. Joe Scheider had three strikeouts over the final 2.0 innings.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, UWEC 4
Nystrom blasted the first pitch of the second inning out to left to give UWSP a 1-0 lead.
The Blugolds tied the game in the third on an unearned run. UWEC took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on a solo home run. In the seventh, UWEC used three hits to score two runs and put UWSP in a 4-1 hole.
Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) started the eighth with a single and Brown followed with a base hit to put two aboard. Two batters later, Olson singled to plate a run. Argersinger followed with a sac fly to get UWSP within 4-3.
Josh Gilroy (Merton, Wis./Arrowhead) and Drohner drew consecutive walks to start the ninth, but UWSP was unable to get either runner home.
Kaeden Wagenaar (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) went 4.0 innings in the start and had four strikeouts.
Jeremiah Jahnke (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) struck out one in 2.0 IP.
Isaac Beeler (Austin, Texas/Westlake) and
Jake Williams (Carol Stream, Ill./Wheaton North) each pitched an inning in relief.
The Pointers will host UW-River Falls on Friday (Apr. 10) in the home opener. First pitch at Zimmermann Field is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
