STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (16-19, 9-15) battled to a pair of tough losses in the series finale against UW-La Crosse (27-9, 18-6) on Sunday. The Pointers dropped game one, 8-5, before coming up short in game two, 4-3.
Tommy Drohner (Plover, Wis./SPASH) and
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) both had two hits in each game. Oliver drove in two and scored once.
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) had a hit in each game and drove in three in game one.
Game 1 – UWSP 5, UWL 8
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) drew a walk with one away in the third. Drohner and Oliver followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Olson hit a sac fly as UWSP took a 1-0 lead.
UWL hit a two-run home run in the fourth and got a two-run single in the fifth as UWSP trailed, 4-1. The Eagles tacked on two unearned runs in the sixth to put the Pointers at a 6-1 deficit.
Oliver singled to start the sixth. Olson followed with a two-run home run.
Braylen Nystrom (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) drew a walk and
Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) singled to put two aboard. Two batters later,
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) drove in a run with a single.
Easton Snow (DeForest, Wis./DeForest Area) followed and did the same as the Pointers got within 6-5.
The Eagles posted two runs in the seventh on two hits, a walk and a hit batter.
Steven Wintheiser (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) went 5.2 innings in the start. He struck out five.
JT Hockers (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) tossed the final 3.1 innings.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, UWL 4
Mason Fink (Verona, Wis./Verona) drew a walk with one out in the third. Adams and Drohner had consecutive singles to load the bases. Oliver singled to push home two runs. Then with two away and runners on the corners, Oliver got caught in a run down in order for Drohner to score from third for a 3-0 lead.
UWL got one run back in the fourth and tacked on a run in the seventh to get within 3-2. The Eagles took the lead in the eighth with two runs on one hit, a walk, a hit batter and an error.
Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) went 7.2 innings in the start and struck out 10.
Jeremiah Jahnke (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) had one strikeout in 1.1 innings of relief.
The Pointers face Ripon in the non-conference finale on Tuesday (Apr. 28) at 3:00 p.m. at Zimmermann Field.
