Late Rally Lifts Pointers to Split with UWL

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (16-17, 9-13) rallied late in game two to split with visiting UW-La Crosse (25-9, 16-6) on Saturday. The Pointers dropped game one, 10-4, before a late rally gave UWSP a 12-7 win in game two.
 
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) had two hits in each game. He drove in six on the day and homered in each game while scoring five runs. Braylen Nystrom (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) and Drew Mistele (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) each had a hit in both games. Nystrom had five RBI, including a home run.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 4, UWL 10
Tommy Drohner (Plover, Wis./SPASH) drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the first. After he stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch, Oliver launched his first home run of the day for a 2-0 UWSP lead.
 
The Eagles got one run back in the third and scored twice in the fifth to put UWSP behind, 3-2.
 
Mistele singled to start the fifth for the Pointers. He moved to second on a groundout and Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) hit a two-out double to tie the game at 3-3.
 
Oliver drew a walk to begin the sixth. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Nystrom followed with an RBI double as UWSP went back in front, 4-3.
 
UWL scored three times in the seventh on two hits. The Eagles added three more in the eighth and one in the ninth to complete the scoring.
 
Kenny Schultz (Plover, Wis./SPASH) pitched 6.1 innings in the start and struck out four. Jeremiah Jahnke (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) tossed 1.2 innings and Joe Schneider (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) pitched the ninth.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 12, UWL 7
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) and Mason Fink (Verona, Wis./Verona) had consecutive singles to start the third inning. Drohner was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Oliver grounded out to drive in the first run of the game and a 1-0 UWSP lead.
 
UWL scored three times in the fourth on three hits and a walk.
 
In the fifth, Drohner drew a two-out walk. Oliver lifted his second home run of the day as UWSP tied it up at 3-3.
 
The teams traded runs in the sixth. Nystrom started the bottom of the frame by reaching on an error. He moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on a single by Mistele.
 
In the seventh, each team scored three runs. Drohner was hit by a pitch to begin the Pointers' half. Oliver was also hit by a pitch and a UWL error plated the first run. Nystrom and Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) hit back-to-back sac flies for a 7-7 tie.
 
Adams reached on a wild pitch with two away in the bottom of the eighth. Drohner was hit by a pitch and Oliver singled to put UWSP in front. Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) singled to push the lead to two runs. Nystrom followed with a three-run home run for a 12-7 lead.
 
Josh Steger (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) went 6.0 innings in the start. He struck out three. Easton Zempel (Middleton, Wis./Middleton), Jahnke and Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) pitched an inning each in relief. Zempel and Jahnke had one strikeout each and Ehr fanned three.
 
The Pointers and Eagles wrap up the weekend series at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday (Apr. 26) at Zimmermann Field.
