WESTFIELD, Ind. – The UW Stevens Point baseball team (0-1) opened the season with a 10-9 loss in 11 innings against Illinois Tech (1-0) in the season opener for both teams.
Cooper Brown (Appleton, Wis./West) had three hits, scored two runs and drove in four on a grand slam home run.
Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had four hits, including a two-run home run.
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) drove in three on two hits, two walks and he scored a run.
Landon Parlier (Wausau, Wis./West) had two hits and drew a walk.
Argersinger drew a walk to start the game. With one away,
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Brown hit a grand slam for the first UWSP hit of the season.
IIT got two runs back in the bottom of the first and added a run in the fourth to make it 4-3. The Scarlet Hawks took the lead in the sixth with a pair of runs on three hits for aa 5-4 advantage. IIT tacked on a run in seventh on back-to-back two-out hits to put UWSP behind, 6-4.
Josh Steger (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) hit a pinch-hit leadoff single in the top of the eighth. Two batters later, Ramirez belted a two-run home run to tie the game at 6-6.
The game remained deadlocked at 6-6 until the 11th. Brown reached on an error to begin the 11th. Parlier singled and both advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) was intentionally walked to load the bases. Two batters later, Argersinger cleared the bases with a double for a 9-6 lead.
IIT started the bottom of the 11th with a triple. A single scored the first run. A wild pitch and a walk put runners at the corners. An error allowed another run to come in for a 9-8 score. With two outs and runners on the corners, a double plated both runners as IIT earned the walk-off win.
Kenny Schultz (Plover, Wis./SPASH) went 5.0 innings in the start. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
JT Hockers (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) went 2.0 frames with two strikeouts.
Kaeden Wagenaar (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) pitched 3.0 innings with three strikeouts.
The Pointers and Scarlet Hawks play a doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 28) at 12:00 p.m. ET to wrap up play on opening weekend.
