STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 19 UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (18-6, 8-5) suffered its first home loss of the season, 80-70, to visiting UW-Whitewater (18-6, 9-4).
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) led all scorers with 28 points.
Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly),
Logan Baumgartner (Medford, Wis./Medford) and
Carter Combs (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) also scored in double digits with 15, 10 and 10 points, respectively. The quartet was a perfect 18-for-18 from the free-throw line.
Butler and Miron drilled three-pointers and combined for five points apiece as UWSP scored on its first four possessions. Butler reached double figures with another three for a brief 17-15 advantage.
Grant Manz (Kiel, Wis./Kiel) scored three points and Baumgartner hit from beyond the arc for a 25-21 lead. Butler scored six more down the stretch and UWSP held a 35-28 lead at the break.
Baumgartner and Combs had three points each as the Pointers went up, 41-31, three minutes into the second half. Butler completed an and-one, but UWW posted a game-changing 26-5 run as UWSP fell behind, 57-46.
Combs and Butler each buried a three and had five points apiece from the floor, but UWSP couldn't get closer than nine points the final 3:54.
The Pointers travel to UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Feb. 21) for the regular season finale. Tip off is at 7:00 p.m.
