OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (4-4) rolled to a 3-0 sweep of Marian (1-6) before taking No. 10 WashU (6-1) to a fifth set in a 3-2 defeat at the Mary Petersen Invitational.
Hannah Strege (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) posted her fifth double-double of the season with 35 assists and 16 digs versus WashU. She had 22 assists against Marian, more than the entire Sabres team.
Abby Nevins (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) was in double-figure digs in both matches with team highs of 11 and 23 on the day.
Ella Trieloff (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Viator) and
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) had 13 and 10 kills, respectively, versus WashU.
Game 1 – UWSP 3, Marian 0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-15)
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had a kill and an ace and Shaw added a pair of kills in a 10-1 run as UWSP seized control early.
Bella Lucero (Antioch, Ill./Carmel Catholic) had an ace in another 5-0 burst and Thomka finished the first-set win with a pair of late kills.
Thomka and Strege both had consecutive aces as the Pointers jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the second.
Logan Cregan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) and
Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) each had a kill late as UWSP took a 2-0 lead.
Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) had a pair of aces early and
Samantha Kempinger (Oshkosh, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) had two kills as UWSP went up 12-9 in the third.
Isabella Digman (Cuba City, Wis./Cuba City) served her first career ace and UWSP closed the match with a 5-1 run.
Game 2 – UWSP 2, WashU 3 (25-23, 23-25, 11-25, 25-16, 9-15)
Shaw had three kills as UWSP built an 11-3 lead out of the gate. Thomka had kill halting a 7-0 WashU run to tie the set at 16-16. Shaw added four more kills and the Pointers took to first set.
Deliliah Hyland recorded two early kills as the teams traded leads.
Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) had two kills as UWSP used a 7-2 run to get within 22-21. Cregan had a kill to avert the first set point before WashU evened the match at 1-1.
Cregan had a kill and an ace, but WashU ran away with the third set.
Trieloff had five kills in the fourth as UWSP got a 17-12 lead.
Jadynn Gruner (Portage, Wis./Portage) had a kill to spark a 5-0 run as Strege served an ace to send the match to a fifth set.
Trieloff got UWSP on the board with a kill after a 6-0 start by WashU. Thomka had four kills, but UWSP couldn't catch up as WashU prevailed in five.
The Pointers travel to Illinois for the Wheaton Tournament beginning on Friday (Sept. 12) with a 6:30 p.m. match against Calvin.
