WHEATON, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (5-4) swept Calvin (5-2) to open play at the Marilyn Scribner Invitational on Friday night.
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) led the Pointers with 10 kills.
Hannah Strege (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) tied for the match-high with 16 assists.
Abby Nevins (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) led all players with 15 digs.
Delilah Hyland (Glen Ellyn, Ill./IC Catholic Prep) had all three of her blocks early in the first set as the teams played to a 12-12 tie.
Logan Cregan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) had consecutive kills as UWSP trailed 18-17.
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had a kill and an ace as UWSP jumped in front, 21-20. Shaw gave UWSP its first set point at 24-23. After a pair of Calvin set points were thwarted, Thomka had two kills in a 3-0 burst as UWSP took the set, 28-26.
Savanna Moe (Saint Paul, Minn/St. Croix Lutheran Academy) had an ace in a 4-0 run early in the second set. Thomka had a kill and an ace as the Pointers started to rally after a 6-0 run by Calvin.
Sadie Grabarski (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee Community) and
Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) had a block and two kills apiece as UWSP closed the second set with an 11-1 run to take it, 25-19.
Grabarski had a kill and a block as the Pointers started the third set up 4-0. Shaw had two kills as UWSP got back to a tie at 13-13. Shaw had three-straight kills in a 6-0 run as the Pointers finished the sweep with a 25-20 win in set three.
The Pointers will face Concordia University Chicago and host Wheaton on Saturday at at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.
