STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior
Brycen Cashin (Plover, Wis./Pacelli) recorded the fourth longest kickoff return in program history as the UW-Stevens Point football team (2-0) earned a 41-17 win over St. Norbert (0-2) in Saturday's Pink Game. Cashin now owns two of the five longest kickoff return touchdowns in school history. The Pointers' 41 points in the win is the most since a 51-28 win over Dakota State in 2018.
Cashin posted a 97-yard kickoff return, the second longest of his career (98 yards in 2022). He totaled 180 return yards on three kick returns. He also led the Pointers with 46 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Charlie Smith (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) was 12-for-19 with 153 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Ben Wollersheim (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) had a team-high four catches for 64 yards and a touchdown.
Matt Getgen (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) had the other receiving touchdown.
Reed Smith (Powell, Wyo./Powell) and
Lucas Milz (South Wayne, Wis./Black Hawk) had seven rushes each and both scored a rushing touchdown.
On defense,
Denver Treleven (Omro, Wis./Omro) led the way with 15 tackles.
Joe Berens (Wausau, Wis./West) added nine tackles.
Charlie Anderson (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) had the only interception of the day.
The Green Knights got on the board first with a seven-play drive on their second possession.
The Pointers got their first turnover of the game when a muffed punt was recovered by
Brandon Morrissey (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) at the SNC 6. Three-straight rushes by Cashin for two yards each got the Pointers even at 7-7.
On UWSP's first offensive play of the second quarter, Smith hit Wollersheim for a 46-yard touchdown and a 14-7 lead.
SNC drove to the UWSP 25 and put a field goal on the board. On the ensuing kickoff, Cashin dashed 97 yards to put the Pointers up 21-10.
After the Green Knights scored a touchdown to get within 21-17, Cashin ripped off a 66-yard kickoff return to the SNC 26. On the next play, Smith hit Getgen and the Pointers took a 28-17 lead into halftime.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the Pointers were driving as the fourth quarter started. The Pointers capped the 10-play drive, nine of which were rushes, with a
Reed Smith (Powell, Wyo./Powell) touchdown run for a 35-17 lead.
After SNC's second muffed punt was recovered by
Paul Morris (McFarland, Wis./McFarland), UWSP put up a nine-play scoring drive culminated by a Milz nine-yard touchdown.
The Pointers will travel to Oregon for the final non-conference game of the season next Saturday (Sept. 20). Kickoff at Pacific is slated for 6:00 p.m. PT.
